Overview

Everything you need to know about Marvel's Wolverine at a glance.

Marvel's Wolverine is an action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, launching exclusively on PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026. Created in collaboration with Marvel Games, it delivers an original, emotionally charged story centered on James "Logan" Howlett — the centuries-old mutant known as Wolverine.

Unlike Insomniac's Spider-Man series, Wolverine embraces a mature, M-rated tone with visceral claw combat, dismemberment, and a narrative that cuts deeper than action alone. The game is a standalone entry that shares continuity with Insomniac's Marvel universe but requires no prior Spider-Man experience.

Players will traverse global locations including the Canadian wilderness, Tokyo, and Madripoor while fighting Bolivar Trask's Reavers, iconic villains, and uncovering the truth of Logan's forgotten past. Built from the ground up for PS5 with DualSense haptics, PS5 Pro Enhanced support, and 31 accessibility features at launch.

Story & Setting

Logan's return to Team X and the fight for mutant survival.

Three years after walking out on his team, Logan rejoins Team X — a last-stand mutant task force facing its darkest hour. Billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask, driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority, has begun kidnapping mutants. The Reavers, a cybernetic guns-for-hire militia, hunt and capture mutants on Trask's behalf.

Mutants live in the shadows, fearful of those hunting them, while humanity remains largely unaware of their existence. Logan must team up with fellow mutants across the globe — including the powerful telekinetic Jean Grey — to save captured mutants and confront a dark past he cannot remember.

The narrative explores identity, loyalty, and the struggle within as Wolverine fights for a cause greater than himself. Beneath his gruff exterior and violent temperament lies a man determined to uncover the truth of his forgotten past while protecting mutantkind from annihilation.

James "Logan" Howlett / Wolverine

Protagonist

Centuries-old mutant with adamantium claws, heightened animalistic instincts, and a healing factor. Voiced by Liam McIntyre. Logan rejoins Team X to save kidnapped mutants and uncover his lost memories. Combat revolves around brutal claw attacks, Rage buildup, and strategic use of his Healing Factor.

Jean Grey

Ally

Powerful telekinetic and emergent leader among captured mutants. Jean fights alongside Logan using devastating telekinetic abilities that create opportunities for cooperative Critical Strikes — finishing moves Logan can execute with allies during frenzied combat.

The Reavers

Enemy Faction

Omega Red

Iconic Marvel villain confirmed in official store descriptions. Described as a boorish, formidable foe that Logan must overcome using Techniques and Adaptations.

Mystique

Supporting

Shape-shifting mutant referenced in pre-order avatar content and Marvel mythology. Role in the story not yet fully detailed.

Sabretooth

Pending official info

Teased Villain

Briefly teased at the end of the June 2026 State of Play gameplay trailer. Insomniac confirmed more characters and enemy factions remain to be revealed before launch.

Sentinels

Enemy Type

Referenced in official game descriptions and Marvel wiki sources as appearing enemies within the broader X-Men mythos context of the game.

Combat Systems

Rage, Techniques, Adaptations, and the brutal combat loop.

Combat in Marvel's Wolverine is fast, fluid, and unapologetically violent. Logan can stalk enemies for stealth takedowns, ambush from above, or shred through foes with adamantium claw attacks. Environmental kills allow impaling enemies on sharp objects for instant takedowns.

Every successful attack, parry, and kill builds Rage — a momentum meter that represents Logan's escalating feral state. Rage powers stronger combos, Critical Strikes, special Techniques, and the Healing Factor. Managing Rage decay while staying aggressive is central to mastery.

Special abilities mapped to L2 plus face buttons operate on a cooldown system. Players can swap Techniques and Adaptations to customize approach — whether stalking, ambushing, or overpowering enemies head-on.

Rage System

Tier 1 — Building

Attacks and kills generate Rage. Combos begin gaining power as the meter fills.

Tier 2 — Empowered

Mid-meter combos become significantly more powerful. Rage begins decaying if aggression stops — incentive to keep pressing the attack.

Tier 3 — Feral

Monochromatic savage state inspired by Marvel's Black, White & Blood comics. Critical Strikes impale enemies with brute force. Rage drains rapidly — choose targets wisely and ignore defense.

Techniques

Tornado Spin

Area-clearing rotational claw attack for groups of Reavers.

Bull Rush

Charging claw assault that breaks through enemy lines.

Critical Strikes

Devastating finishers executed solo or with allies like Jean Grey during takedown opportunities.

Last Stand

When Logan's heart stops from overwhelming damage, rapidly press inputs to channel stored Rage into a Healing Surge and return to battle.

Core Mechanics

Healing Factor Passive regeneration slows during intense combat. Overloaded by sustained damage, Logan can die — unless Rage triggers a Healing Surge adrenaline boost.
Adaptations Swappable combat modifiers that alter playstyle between stalking, ambushing, and direct assault approaches.
Technique Points Progression currency for unlocking and upgrading Techniques. Deluxe Edition and pre-order bonuses grant additional points.
Vehicle Combat Motorcycle chase sequences featuring highway combat — slashing tires, hurling enemies, and leaping between vehicles.
Stealth Over-the-shoulder perspective stealth segments where Logan eliminates unaware enemies with signature claw kills.

Locations

Global settings confirmed for Wolverine's journey.

Canadian Wilderness

Frosted, detailed wilderness representing Logan's homeland. The Canadian setting ties to Wolverine's comic book origins and serves as one of the game's primary atmospheric environments with set-piece combat encounters.

Tokyo, Japan

Narrow streets and urban environments in Japan provide contrast to wilderness areas. Tokyo appears as part of the global globetrotting mission structure with intense street-level action.

Madripoor

The Marvel island nation's high and low districts serve as a key battlefield. Madripoor is known in comics as a lawless haven — fitting for Wolverine's violent, noir-adjacent narrative tone.

Suits & Claws

Cosmetic customization options and how to unlock them.

Suits and claws in Marvel's Wolverine are purely cosmetic — no gameplay stat changes. All variants can be earned through standard progression, with select items offered as pre-order or Digital Deluxe exclusives for early access.

Insomniac has confirmed additional suit and claw details will be shared closer to launch. The Classic Brown Suit references Wolverine's iconic comic look from the 1970s–80s.
